”Science That Works… Peak Height / Dynamic Loft Discussion”

Hello,

Last article we discussed how I measure contact and curvature with TrackMan or FlightScope. This article we are going to be discussing Trajectory and Distance Control. Below, you will find the main topics to this article.

1. What is Peak Height….?

2. Dynamic Loft Education

What is Peak Height….?

So, let’s start off with Peak Height! Now, trajectory has more data points than the two that we are going to be discussing in this article. However, these two data points are going to be the easiest to understand first. Now, most golfers when they think of trajectory, are really seeing the “Peak Height”. This is because by the time you see the ball in the air it is already well towards it’s path to reaching the peak height of it’s trajectory.

So, Peak Height is really the highest point of the balls flight throughout the whole distance the ball flies through the air. When most instructors discuss high, low, or mid trajectory this is really what they are referring to. However, it is a bit more complicated than that but for this email we will keep it simple. Now, typically depending on the monitor you are using they will measure peak height in yards or feet.

Now, why is Peak Height so important for you to master and understand? Well, in lessons I always like to bring up the bell curve graph example. See, there are certain peak heights that are optimal for different tasks. Let’s say you wanted to hit the driver as far as you possibly could. There is actually an optimal peak height for your club head speed. If your peak height is too high you will lose distance. If your peak height is too low, you will also lose distance. So, relating this back to the bell curve. We can actually map out mathematically what is the ideal peak height for optimal distance with your driver. And, the results of this data would look very much like a bell curve graph.

Now, to do this accurately there are more data points that need to be added to make this completely accurate. However, for most of you, if you can understand that there is no such thing as an optimal peak height for “everyone”. You will be much farther along than most golfer’s.

Dynamic Loft Education

So, moving on to Dynamic Loft. Now, very simply dynamic loft is the loft you present to the golf ball at the moment of impact. You have probably noticed that every club has a different loft. So, dynamic loft really shows us if you are presenting the loft that the club has, or are you taking off loft, or adding loft. This as you can probably see is vital for controlling your peak height. Which, hopefully you understand Peak Height is strongly correlated to your distance control.

Now, just like we stated the reason you need to learn about Dynamic Loft is because is strongly correlates to peak height. So, you’re probably thinking to yourself which Dynamic Loft is best for me? Well, in this particular article we are going to talk about three specific checkpoints to think about before you decide what Dynamic Loft is best for you.

1. Goal

-I always recommend my clients to think about the end goal first. What type of trajectory are you trying to achieve? Do you wish to hit the ball high, low, mid? Again, it’s important to note that not one is better than the other. More so, it’s deciding which one is best for the shot at hand as well as what you’re personally capable of producing.

2. Club Head Speed

– Now, the faster you swing the easier it is to hit the ball higher. In turn, the slower you swing the easier it is to hit the ball lower. This is important, because a high trajectory for a slow swinging player will be much lower than a high trajectory for a high speed player. Hence, club head speed needs to be thought of before you decide the correct Dynamic Loft for you.

3. Club

– Since every club has a different loft, you will need to find the correct dynamic loft that not only meets the previous two checkpoints. But, as well meets the club specifications you are currently using.

Wrap Up

I hope you enjoyed this article! Now, I know there’s so much more information that can be discussed regarding peak height and dynamic loft. However, for now we will end this article. If you wish to learn more about this subject we are currently creating courses and webinars with much more information.

Thank you,

-Kiwicoach
