”Ball position matters? …. period…”

Hello,

Last article we discussed some backswing motions or positions that could affect curvature. This particular article we will now be discussing some set up positions that could potentially affect curvature. Below, you will find the main talking points of this article.

1. Ball Position Influences Path

2. Body Lines

Ball Position Influences Path

Now, I would be the first person to say that ball position doesn’t have a hundred percent correlation when it comes to club path. However, there is definitely a strong correlation between ball position and club path. And, if you remember Club Path and Face Angle are the two data points that directly affect curvature. So, whenever you are discussing a position that affects club path or face angle that just means it will ultimately also have an effect on curvature.

So, the question is how could ball position affect club path? Well, you need to start thinking of the bottom of the swing in the sense of an arc. If you can imagine a hula hoop that is tilted at roughly a 56 degree angle you will get a pretty good representative of a 7 iron’s arc. Now, I want you to place a golf ball at the bottom of the arc right in the center. Next, move behind the golf ball like you are going to hit it. You will probably see that the hula hoop is parallel to the target line for a small section before it curves off on either side.

You will also notice that since the golf ball is in the center of the arc, it is on the section that is parallel to the target line. Now, move the golf ball back around 2-3 inches. You’ll now notice that the golf ball is in line with the part of the arc that is not parallel to the target line. This section of the hula hoop is actually pointing to the right of the target line. This means that if you move your ball position back in your stance three inches it will effectively move your club path more to the right.

Now, like I referenced at the beginning of the article this isn’t always true. A player could theoretically override this by swinging much more left. Or, they could also open up their stance, etc. However, let’s say the player made two identical swings. One swing was where the ball position was in the middle of the hula hoop, and the other was when the ball position was 2-3 inches back on the hula hoop. The ball position that was 2-3 inches back would produce a more rightward club path than the ball position that was in the center of the hula hoop. I hope you are starting to get the point on why ball position doesn’t always 100% correlate to a shift in path. However, it definitely has a strong correlation due to the fact the player would have to physically override the new ball position by compensating.

So, to wrap up this section I wanted to end with this. Just realize, if you change your ball position back in your stance you will most likely have a more rightward path than compared to your old ball position. As well, if you move your ball position forward you will most likely have a more leftward path compared to your old ball position. Now, does this mean you will shift your path to positive or negative with this ball position shift? This solely depends on where your club path was before the change as well as what you did with your swing after the ball position change.

Body Lines

Now, the next position we will be discussing is “Body Lines”. For the readers who do not know what I’m referencing, I’m discussing the orientation of your hips, shoulders, etc. relative to the target line. Per example, you could have your “body lines” directed left of the target line. This in the golf world is called an “open stance”.

So, how does this affect curvature? Well, there is definitely a strong correlation between body lines and club path. To reference the last section, if you can understand that the player can always override anything at set up… You will find this section to make sense as well. A general rule of thumb is that an open stance will shift your club path more to the left than it would if you had an identical swing but with body lines that were parallel to the target line. As well, a closed stance or body lines will shift your club path more right than an identical swing but with the body lines that were parallel to the target line.

Now, just because I’m telling you that body lines can potentially shift path… Does NOT mean that open body lines = negative path, or closed body lines = positive path. No, more so this just means that body lines will shift the club path more either direction relative to an identical swing that had a neutral or opposite body line position.

To sum this up, just think of everything in set up as potential “shifters”. Set up does not guarantee a shift in anything. However, it can definitely have an effect on curvature, contact, etc. Again, this straight out of the “Corridors of Success” with Jim McLean. The boxes of okay are wider on the backswing, and more narrow on the downswing. I have absolutely found this to be true in my teachings.

Wrap Up

I hope you enjoyed this article about set up positions that can affect curvature. There are more positions throughout set up that could affect curvature however for this article we will stop it here. Again, we are currently building out courses and Webinars that will fill in all the missing information from these articles.
